The Health & Safety in Employment Act’s (1972) principal objective is to prevent harm to employees at work. Are you doing all you can?
Employees must take all practicable steps to eliminate, isolate, or minimise significant hazards (section 8, 9, 10). In addition, the employer must, where appropriate ensure that protective clothing and equipment is provided, accessible and used.
Section 12 also stresses the need for employees to be able to understand the information they are given. Where employees are not fluent in the English language, or are unable to read English, employers may need to find an alternative method of providing information, such as visual aids, pictograms or other graphics.
